Computer Support Specialist
Position Purpose
Support the Information System Manager, in the maintenance of computer
network systems, equipment, software and environment. Support staff,
volunteers, and participants of Head Start of Lane County with relevant
training and education of computer related functions, software and systems.
Essential Job Responsibilities – Performance Indicators
Assist Information Systems Manager (40%)
- Assist in the coordination and
purchase of software and hardware for personal computers and network.
Install and implement purchased systems; evaluate systems and databases in
relation to specific user requests; evaluate hardware and software; test
products to determine if performance meets stated specifications.
- Clarify and assess users
computing needs.
- Support local area network
(LAN), Internet connections. Support applications including Windows (ver 3.1, 95,98), ‘Microsoft
Office Professional’, and the Head Start Family Information System
(HSFIS.) Support specialized vertical market applications (educational
software) and other programs.
- Install, configure and
maintain computer software and upgrade as necessary.
- Maintain staff computers,
classroom computers, parent computers, and all educational software used
by Head Start children and staff.
- Maintain computer hardware,
clean, repair, and replace as indicated.
- Perform related work as
required.
Organizational Planning / Documentation (20%)
- Meet weekly with supervisor
to discuss maintenance and training needs.
- Perform written and telephone
correspondence.
- Maintain contact and support
with Head Start sites and staff.
- Prepare and maintain
computerized database of equipment and software.
- Make decisions, and exercise
judgment in analyzing problems and determining organization of work.
- Assist in the development of
future department needs for Head Start.

sensitive and are subject to Head Start's policy on confidentiality.
Computer Training (20%)
- Assess user skill level and
decide appropriate training approach.
- Provide technical assistance
and training, formal and informal of Head Start staff and parents on the
use of computers, programs and Internet/E-mail.
- Coach users on basic uses of
computer hardware and software; assist users with problem solving.
Research and Development (20%)
- Assist in research,
proposals, bid, and purchase of new computer and network equipment,
hardware and software.
- Research developing technologies,
which would benefit Head Start of Lane County.
- Maintain current knowledge of
changing systems and programs.
Education and Experience and Requirements
- An Associates degree in
computer science or computer information systems/networks is highly
preferred and a minimum of two years experience managing and
supporting systems and staff in a PC network environment.
- General knowledge of
microcomputer software, hardware and principles. Basic knowledge of
microcomputer networking concepts. General knowledge of major classes of
application software, ability to use generally accepted accounting
principles.
- Experience assisting in the
maintenance of a computer network.
- Strong knowledge of operating
systems and general business software programs.
- Excellent oral, written
communication skills, including group presentations.
- Good diagnostic,
troubleshooting, and problem solving skills.
- Current enrollment in
Child-Care Division Criminal History Registry.
- Current Oregon Driver's
License and proof of current auto insurance.
Physical/Mental Abilities and Processes
- Ability to make independent
decisions, and exercise judgment in analyzing problems and determining
correct procedures to be followed.
- Ability to establish good
working relationships and work harmoniously with others, both as a team
and independently.
- Ability to prepare reports
and documents and to explain them in precise technical terms.
- Ability to keep current and
adapt to changing environments and new technologies.
- The ability to develop new
skills and knowledge as needed.
- The ability to lift and carry
up to 50 pounds for up to 100 yards.
- The ability to regularly to
bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl in order to work behind and under equipment.
Position Information
- 12 months
- Supervised by the Information
Systems Manager.
